Statement From Senator Heather Somers on the Passing of Former LG Nancy Wyman
August 12, 2026
“I was deeply saddened to hear of Nancy Wyman’s passing.
I had the privilege of being the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 2014. She was a formidable opponent, but what I remember most was how gracious, kind, and genuinely wonderful she was throughout the campaign. She always treated me with respect, even as we competed against one another. We would often joke that it was the “high heels” election, and shared a lot of laughs along the way.
Our paths crossed again when I began my first term in the State Senate in 2016, with Nancy presiding over the Senate as Lieutenant Governor. I came to appreciate her grace in a different way as someone who understood the importance of treating our institution with dignity, regardless of party or position.
Nancy was a remarkable public servant and an even more remarkable person. I will always be grateful to have known her and to have experienced firsthand the grace she brought to public life.
My thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family and all who loved her.”
