Sen. Fazio Statement on Sale of Aquarion Water Company - CT Senate Republic

HARTFORD, CT – State Senator Ryan Fazio (R-Greenwich) today released the following statement regarding the closing of Eversource’s sale of Aquarion Water Company:

“The closing of the Aquarion sale, pushed by Gov. Lamont, is good news for Eversource, which is making billions on the sale, but bad news for the Connecticut families who will have to pay higher water rates.

From the start of this debate two years ago, I opposed this transaction because it was done behind closed doors, rushed through the legislature without a public hearing, and ignored serious concerns raised by municipal leaders and ratepayers across our state.

Last week, the bond rating agencies confirmed my concerns that the new quasi-governmental water utility will be able to raise water bills by more than the previous structure. Connecticut faces some of the highest utility costs in the nation, and this deal will only increase water rates and property taxes for families, seniors, and small businesses who are already struggling under the high cost of living.

For two years, leaders on both sides of the aisle have joined me in warning against this deal and higher water utility bills. Gov. Lamont ignored all of them and never answered for it. Now we are all going to pay.”
