Senator Heather Somers Unveils $200,000 for Plainfield VFW - CT Senate Republic

PLAINFIELD, CT—State Senator Heather Somers (R—Stonington) today announced that Plainfield VFW Post 5446 will receive $200,000 through this year’s state budget adjustment to support building repairs and rehabilitation efforts. Senator Somers advocated for the funding following multiple visits to the facility, where she witnessed firsthand the urgent infrastructure and maintenance needs facing the post. The funding will help address longstanding issues at the VFW, ensuring the organization can continue serving local veterans and the broader Plainfield community for years to come.

“This is much-needed funding for Plainfield VFW,” said Somers. “I have visited the building multiple times and have seen firsthand some of the challenges they are dealing with. Our veterans deserve so much more. After meeting with leadership, including Bill Landry, I saw a team fully committed to doing everything possible to raise the necessary funds to keep this building operational. I’m thrilled the state could step in and provide support that will go a long way toward addressing many of the issues they are facing.”

Somers said the investment reflects the state’s continued commitment to supporting veterans and preserving the community organizations that serve them.

“Veterans organizations like Plainfield VFW Post 5446 provide an invaluable service to those who have sacrificed for our country,” Somers added. “These funds will help ensure the post remains a safe, functional, and welcoming place for veterans, their families, and the community.”

Plainfield VFW Post 5446 Commander William Landry expressed the post’s gratitude for the state support and noted that the funding will significantly improve their ability to continue operations and serve local veterans.

“We truly appreciate the hard work and dedication by Senator Somers in securing this grant for us,” said Landry. “We will now be able to upgrade our post to allow for all veterans and their families to be able to participate in our organization.

The funding is included as part of the state’s latest budget adjustment package and is expected to support renovations and repairs identified during recent site assessments.
