Sen. Cicarella Hosts Senior Fraud Awareness Informational Forum in Wallingford - CT Senate Republic

Wallingford — State Sen. Paul Cicarella (R-34) hosted a Senior Fraud Awareness informational forum on May 13 at the Wallingford Senior Center alongside the AARP Fraud Watch Network, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, and the Wallingford Police Department in recognition of National Senior Fraud Awareness Day.

The forum focused on helping seniors identify scams, prevent identity theft, and protect themselves from the growing number of financial fraud schemes targeting communities across Connecticut.

Joining Sen. Cicarella on the panel were Deputy Commissioner Jeff Marvin of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, Sgt. Henry Cadett and Detective Sean Houlihan of the Wallingford Police Department, and Kelli Lefler, Associate State Director of Community Outreach for AARP Connecticut.

“Scammers are constantly evolving, and awareness is one of the strongest tools we have to protect ourselves and our loved ones,” said Sen. Cicarella. “Forums like this are important because they provide residents with practical information and resources to help recognize warning signs before it’s too late or what to do if fraud happens.”

“We know that education and awareness are the keys to preventing consumers and businesses from falling victim to scams, especially as scams become more prevalent and sophisticated, making them harder to recognize,” said DCP Deputy Commissioner Jeff Marvin. “The best way to protect your money, personal information, and identity is to know the signs of a scam and avoid it before it’s too late. We are always happy to join community events to help spread the word, prevent fraud and scams, and share our information in case you do fall victim or have questions.”

“Talking about fraud is essential,” said Kelli Lefler of AARP Connecticut. “Awareness continues to be one of the most powerful tools in stopping scams before they happen and protecting our neighbors, friends, and families. AARP is grateful to have participated in this event alongside an incredible group of panelists and engaged community members.”

“If you or a family member has fallen victim to a scam, please report it to local law enforcement immediately,” said Sgt. Henry Cadett of the Wallingford Police Department. “There are often measures that can be taken to minimize loss and help prosecute those responsible, and we are here to help.”

Throughout the discussion, panelists answered questions and shared information on common scam tactics, fraud prevention strategies, identity theft concerns, and resources available to residents.

Sen. Cicarella thanked the participating panelists and attendees for their time and for helping bring awareness to an issue impacting many seniors and families throughout Connecticut.
