HARTFORD – At the Connecticut State Capitol’s 2026 Autism Awareness Day on April 2, State Sen. Tony Hwang (R—Fairfield) stood alongside families, advocates, service providers, and community leaders to call for continued support and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum, especially during the critical transitions into school, employment, and independent living.

This year’s theme, “Autism and Humanity: Every Life Has Value”, was supported by autistic families and advocates through personal stories of love, challenges, perseverance, and advocacy.

“Autism awareness begins with a simple truth: every life has value and every voice matters. Nearly two decades ago, we took an important step forward by expanding access to early diagnosis and care, but our work is far from done. Today, I want to recognize the true heroes—parents and families—whose love, patience, and advocacy have helped their children lead full and meaningful lives.

“What we need now is not sympathy, but greater awareness, understanding, and compassion. When we take the time to learn and listen, we begin to see not differences, but unique strengths and contributions. This is about building a culture that embraces every individual with dignity and respect and ensuring that every family has the support they deserve,” said Sen. Hwang.

The event was hosted by the Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity (CWCSEO), under the compassionate leadership of Executive Director Melvette Hill.

She said, “Every life does have value, and so these four words carry extra extraordinary weight and measure. They remind us that our humanity is not measured by how we conform to expectations, but by how we celebrate the unique contributions each person brings to our communities… In Connecticut, we are home to thousands of individuals on the autism spectrum. Each one deserves to be seen; to be heard, understood, and supported.

The Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity and Opportunities stands firmly committed to advancing policies and programs that recognize the inherent worth of every individual…Today we must move from acceptance to appreciation, and from appreciation to action.”
