Senator Heather Somers Commends Governor Lamont’s Line-Item Vetoes of Funding in SB 298
March 3, 2026
HARTFORD, CT—State Senator Heather Somers (R–Stonington), Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee, today commended Governor Lamont’s decision to use line-item veto authority to strike millions of dollars in earmarked funding from Senate Bill 298. The action follows proposals from both Senate Republicans and the governor aimed at reforming the earmark process.
“I commend the governor for exercising his line-item veto authority to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and transparently,” said Senator Somers. “At a time when reforming the earmark process is a shared priority, it is critical that projects receiving public funds undergo proper review and vetting. I am grateful that he listened to the republicans on this issue, and I look forward to working collaboratively to strengthen accountability and create a more open, transparent process for allocating state resources.”
Senate Republicans have expressed strong opposition to the use of emergency certification to advance non-emergency items, arguing that the practice circumvents the standard legislative review process. Senator Somers noted that the governor’s action reinforces the importance of maintaining transparency and fiscal responsibility in the appropriations process.
