Sen. Sampson: Crowded Hearings Highlight Public Pushback Against Government Overreach

Hartford — State Sen. Rob Sampson (R-16) released the following statement after a crowded day of public hearings at the Legislative Office Building on several “controversial” proposals involving parental rights, medical decision-making, and constitutional freedoms.

“Today’s hearings were packed with dedicated residents who took time out of their busy schedules to come to Hartford and defend their fundamental freedoms. Hallways were overflowing, hearing rooms were filled to capacity, and people made it clear they are paying very close attention to what their government is trying to do.

And frankly, the most disturbing part of today is that many of these issues should never have become controversial in the first place.

The right of parents to direct the education of their children.
The right of families to make medical decisions with their doctors.
The right of law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
And the right of the public to come and testify to their government.

These are not extreme ideas. They are fundamental liberties.

Yet here in Connecticut we increasingly see proposals that expand government power deeper and deeper into the private lives of families and individuals. When government begins inserting itself into decisions that belong to parents, patients, and citizens exercising their constitutional rights, people recognize the danger immediately and today they showed up in force to push back.

I want to sincerely thank every resident who came to Hartford, waited for hours, or submitted testimony to make their voice heard. That kind of civic participation is exactly what representative government is supposed to look like.

The people who filled this building today were not asking for special treatment. They were asking for something very simple: the freedom to make decisions for themselves and their families without unnecessary interference from the state.

The message from Connecticut residents today was loud and unmistakable government should not be replacing parents, overriding personal medical decisions, restricting constitutional rights, or ignoring the voices of the people.

I will continue to stand with the citizens who came to Hartford today and fight to protect the freedoms they came here to defend.”
