Sen. Gordon Speaks Out Against Restrictions on Public Testimony - CT Senate Republic

HARTFORD, CT – State Senator Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock) is raising concerns about recent decisions by several committees to limit the time frame for public hearings. These hearings, which allow members of the public to provide input on important community and policy issues, are a critical part of democratic participation.

“Every member of the public has the right to testify and share their views,” said Sen. Gordon. “Limiting when and how people can participate undermines transparency and the principle that government is accountable to the people.”

The Education Committee has announced it will limit the public hearing on H.B. 5468: An Act Concerning the Provision of Equivalent Instruction to just 24 hours. Likewise, the Public Health Committee plans to close the public hearings on S.B. 450: An Act Concerning the Standard of Care for Immunization and H.B. 5044: An Act Establishing Connecticut Vaccine Standards at midnight.

“This is not just a procedural issue,” Sen. Gordon continued. “Public input shapes decisions that affect our community. It is especially concerning that these committees are restricting free speech on topics that concern individuals’ personal and medical freedoms. This sends a troubling message about whose voices actually matter.”

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in upcoming hearings and contact their local representatives to ensure their voices are heard.
