Sen. Cicarella Welcomes Gov. Lamont’s Veto, Urges Greater Transparency in Budget Process - CT Senate Republic

Hartford – State Senator Paul Cicarella (R–34) issued the following statement regarding the governor’s line-item veto of more than $3.8 million in budget earmarks approved in last week’s “emergency” session:

“I am encouraged that the governor acted on concerns shared by Senate and House Republicans about the lack of transparency and accountability in how certain taxpayer dollars are allocated. Connecticut families and small business owners are facing rising costs and economic challenges, and they deserve a budget process that puts their priorities first and protects every dollar of their hard-earned money. We cannot continue to approve millions in last-minute spending without clear oversight, measurable outcomes, and strict accountability.

“Whether it’s making our communities safer, tackling waste and fraud, or addressing the affordability crisis that burdens working families, our goal must be to restore trust in state government and ensure taxpayers see the value for every dollar spent. Before any additional earmarks are released, we need real reforms, stronger reporting standards, enhanced oversight mechanisms, and a commitment to fiscal responsibility that respects the contributions of Connecticut residents.”

Last month, Sen. Cicarella along with Senate and House Republicans unveiled legislative proposals aimed at strengthening fiscal transparency, reducing costs for families, and improving oversight of state spending to ensure Connecticut’s budget serves the people, not special interests.
