Sen. Cicarella Honors World War II Veteran Michael P. Gibeau on 100th Birthday - CT Senate Republic

WALLINGFORD – State Sen. Paul Cicarella (R-34) today presented a legislative citation to World War II veteran Michael P. Gibeau in recognition of his 100th birthday and his honorable service to the United States.

“It was a great privilege to recognize Mr. Gibeau for his extraordinary life and legacy,” said Sen. Cicarella. “His hard work, passion, and commitment to family and country are truly inspiring.”

Born on March 7, 1926, in Wauregan, Connecticut, Mr. Gibeau grew up in a large family during the Great Depression, learning early the value of hard work and perseverance. He contributed to his household from a young age, holding multiple jobs throughout his youth while completing his education in Millbury, Massachusetts.

Following his graduation from high school in June 1944, Mr. Gibeau enlisted in the United States Navy, entering service during a critical time in World War II. He trained at Camp Sampson in New York before deploying to the Pacific Theater with the 38th Naval Construction Battalion. His service included assignments in Pearl Harbor and Tinian, where he supported vital military operations.

After returning home, Mr. Gibeau settled in New Britain, where he built a life centered on family, faith, and entrepreneurship. Mr. Gibeau founded Hi Fashion Laminates in 1959, a successful business specializing in kitchen and bathroom countertops, earning him the nickname “Formica Mike.” He operated the business for nearly three decades before retiring in 1988.

Mr. Gibeau and his late wife, Shirley, raised five children and were longtime members of St. Francis of Assisi Church. Today, he is the proud patriarch of a large and growing family, including 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In presenting the citation, Sen. Cicarella recognized Mr. Gibeau:

“In recognition of your service as a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and centenarian on the occasion of your 100th birthday. Enlisting in 1944 and serving with the 38th Naval Construction Battalion in the Pacific Theater, you represent a generation whose courage and dedication preserved our freedom. The State of Connecticut proudly honors your military service and this remarkable milestone. Your example of service, sacrifice, and patriotism will inspire generations to come.”

“Celebrating Mr. Gibeau’s 100th birthday is a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and strength that helped shape our great country,” Sen. Cicarella added.
