Senator Heather Somers, CT Senate Republicans Unveil Affordability Plan
February 10, 2026
HARTFORD, CT—State Senator Heather Somers (R–Groton), Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee, today echoed the affordability plan put forward by Senate Republicans to cut Connecticut’s income tax and provide lasting relief to working families.
“This is real money for real people, money they can count on year after year,” said Senator Somers. “It’s not a one-time $200 check showing up in mailboxes right before an election. We cannot continue to withhold money that belongs to Connecticut families. It’s time to remove the target Democrats have placed on people’s pocketbooks.”
Connecticut’s high cost of living continues to squeeze residents, with the state ranking:
- 3rd-highest tax burden
- 3rd-highest electric rates
- 3rd-highest property taxes
- 2nd-highest wealth gap in the nation
“This is no coincidence,” Somers said. “These outcomes are the result of decades of failed, one-party Democratic control in Connecticut.”
Senate Republicans’ affordability plan would provide broad-based, meaningful tax relief, including:
- A 40% income tax reduction for single filers earning up to $50,000 and joint filers earning up to $100,000
- A 16% income tax reduction for single filers earning up to $100,000 and joint filers earning up to $200,000
- Elimination of the income tax for single filers earning up to $25,000
- Up to $1,600 in tax relief for joint filers and up to $800 for single filers
Altogether, the plan delivers over $1 billion in tax relief to Connecticut’s working- and middle-class families.
“As Ranking Member of Appropriations, I know relief is affordable, responsible, and long overdue,” Somers added. “Connecticut families deserve a government that respects their hard work and lets them keep more of what they earn.”
