Sen. Gordon Provides Update on Mansfield Train Derailment
February 5, 2026
HARTFORD, CT – State Senator Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock) today provided an update on the derailment of 14 train cars carrying liquefied natural gas in Mansfield.
“Public safety is one of my top concerns. I have reached out to state agencies, including the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and to the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) to get information and discuss about this incident,” said Sen. Gordon. “I have also communicated with the Coventry town government. Coventry is adjacent to the area in Mansfield but has not been affected by the incident. My priority is public safety, and I am closely monitoring the situation. I encourage everyone to follow the guidance of emergency officials, stay informed, and take precautions as necessary if instructed to do so. Avoid the affected area. Thank you to our first responders and state agencies for taking every precaution to manage this incident safely. I will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.”
The following information is available:
- Road closures: Avoid Route 32 (Stafford Road), which is closed between Route 275 and Route 44. Alternate routes are strongly advised.
- Shelter-in-place advisory: All residents within a half mile of the derailment site should shelter in place until further notice.
- Evacuations: Despite some media reports, Mansfield Emergency Management and DEEP confirm that no evacuations are currently ordered. Authorities will provide updates as the situation develops.
- Prolonged closure expected: Route 32 between Route 44 and Route 275, near the Storrs and Depot campuses, is anticipated to remain closed for the foreseeable future. Residents and commuters should plan alternate routes.
“I will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available,” added Sen. Gordon. “In situations like these, clear communication and vigilance are essential to protect our communities.”
