Winter Storm Incoming—Let’s Be Ready! ❄️⚠️
With snow expected Sunday into Monday, I stopped by Hemlock Hardware to help everyone get storm-ready. They’ve just received a bulk shipment of shovels, ice and snow melt, flashlights, and other must-have supplies, now’s the time to prepare.
I was joined by retired Police Lieutenant James Perez, who shared smart, practical tips on staying safe during emergencies and why having an emergency go-bag can make all the difference if you’re stranded on the road or dealing with a power outage at home. A little prep today means peace of mind tomorrow. Stay safe, and look out for one another.
Remember to prepare EARLY! Here are some tips:
-Stay off the roads except for necessary travel. If you must drive, clear your car off and proceed with extreme caution
-Only call 911 in emergency situations
-For warming shelters and other resources, call 211 or visit 211ct.org. You can also sign up for state alerts through CT Alert
-Make sure you have everything you need BEFORE anticipated snowfall. Food, water, gasoline/oil, flashlights, batteries, phone chargers, medical devices, etc
-When shoveling, remember to remain out of the road for plows
-Take frequent breaks when shoveling and avoid overexertion
-Clear snow and ice from dryer and exhaust vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup
-Allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold to help prevent frozen pipes
-Dress in warm layers and limit time outdoors to prevent frostbite and hypothermia
-Check on elderly neighbors, people with disabilities, and others who may need assistance
-Bring pets indoors and ensure animals have adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water
-Monitor local forecasts and official alerts for updates
-Stay clear of downed power lines and report them to your utility company
