Senator Perillo Raises Concerns Over Aquarion Water Merger and Rising Rates
January 16, 2026
HARTFORD, CT – State Senator Jason Perillo (R-Shelton) strongly urges the Office of the Attorney General to appeal a Connecticut judge’s ruling that overturned state regulators’ decision to deny the Aquarion Water merger.
This ruling comes months after the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) voted to deny the acquisition of Aquarion Water Company by the Regional Water Authority (RWA). The proposed merger raised serious concerns about potentially doubling household water bills and reducing public oversight of water utility rates and consumer protections.
“This overturned decision opens the door to significant increases in utility costs and property taxes at a time when families are already stretched thin. We need to fight for Connecticut residents and address the affordability crisis facing our state,” said Sen. Perillo
Last November, Senator Perillo stood with a bipartisan group of mayors and community advocates to oppose these increases, highlight the lack of transparency, the absence of a public hearing, and the rushed legislative process.
“With this decision, we must continue to prioritize affordability. During the upcoming legislative session, we will introduce legislation to protect already overburdened ratepayers. Water is essential, and Connecticut residents should not be forced to take on unfair costs for a basic necessity,” Sen. Perillo added.
