“Brace Yourselves”: Sens. Hwang & Harding Statement on Partnership Plan Report - CT Senate Republic

Sen. Tony Hwang and Sen. Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding the Connecticut Partnership Plan’s Fiscal Year 2025 report which revealed a deficit of $18.6 million along with a 103.5% Medical Loss Ratio. (View the statement)

“The Partnership Plan is a precursor to universal single-payer health care in Connecticut.

The Partnership Plan is also a precursor to the elimination of private health insurance here: the home of the ‘Insurance Capital of the World’.

The Partnership Plan was supported by majority Democrats. It allows discrimination based on geography and utilization rate. It is not insurance, it is not regulated, and it does not have the protections of the Affordable Care Act.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane: Five short years ago, a $40 million state taxpayer-funded bailout was needed to keep the Partnership Plan afloat. After that bailout, and contrary to promises that it would lower health care costs for Partnership members, the Partnership Plan increased premiums by 10.5 percent, making care more expensive for teachers and municipal employees across the state

And brace yourselves: Connecticut Senate Democrats say passing the public option is their ‘urgent’ priority this year at the State Capitol. In 2019, representatives of Aetna, Anthem Inc., Cigna Corp., ConnectiCare, Harvard Pilgrim and United Healthcare urged Gov. Lamont to not let this insurance industry job killer pass. They were right then, and they are right now.”
