Towns of Ashford, Chaplin, and Willington Awarded $250,000 in State Grants for Remediating and Planning for Repurpose of Blighted or Vacant Properties - CT Senate Republic

HARTFORD, CT – State Senator Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock) today celebrated the towns of Ashford, Chaplin, and Willington being awarded $250,000 in state grant funding to support much-needed remediation and reuse planning for blighted or vacant properties. The funding is provided through the State of Connecticut’s Brownfield Remediation and Development Program, which supports economic and community development projects across the state.

“These grants are major wins for Northeast Connecticut,” said Senator Gordon. “Being able to repurpose blighted or vacant properties in Ashford, Chaplin, and Willington for other purposes is a good investment in our communities. I am proud to have supported these projects and happy to see the state grant funding move forward. This is one step in long-range projects, but an important step.”

  • $50,000 will be sent to the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments for the assessment of the 1.2-acre site of the former Chaplin Post Office, located at 142 Chaplin Street in Chaplin. These assessment activities will enable the town to remediate the site for potential commercial use.
  • $200,000 is being sent to the towns of Ashford and Willington for environmental assessment, market analysis, and other planning activities at the Cadlerock property, a 338.55-acre, 12-parcel area straddling the town lines. These activities will help identify future reuse options and development path for the property.

The grants are administered through the Department of Economic and Community Development’s Brownfield Remediation and Development Program.
