FAIRFIELD, CT – State Senator Tony Hwang (Fairfield) issued a strong statement condemning the recent anti-Semitic vandalism of a menorah at Congregation B’nai Israel, calling the incident “deeply painful and unacceptable” and reaffirming his unwavering support for the Jewish community in the Bridgeport/Fairfield communities and throughout Connecticut.
The vandalism targeted a menorah that had long served as a cherished symbol of faith and resilience for the Jewish faith and Hanukkah celebration. The menorah was originally built and donated by the grandfather of synagogue members, a Holocaust survivor whose life story embodied strength, remembrance, and hope. The deliberate destruction of this sacred religious symbol has been reported to law enforcement and remains under investigation.
“This was not simply damage to property, it was an attack on faith, memory, and the right of our Jewish neighbors to live and worship without fear,” said Senator Hwang. “To intentionally vandalize a religious symbol during a time of celebration is heartbreaking. It should alarm every resident who believes in tolerance, dignity, and respect.”
Senator Hwang emphasized that Fairfield has long prided itself on being a welcoming and inclusive interfaith community, and that there must be zero tolerance for anti-Semitic acts or any form of hate-motivated intimidation.
“There is no place for hatred or bigotry of any kind in our community,” he said. “I stand in full solidarity with the Jewish and all interfaith communities during this painful violation of the holiday spirit of resiliency and compassion, and I reaffirm my commitment to ensuring that every resident, regardless of their faith, race or heritage, will be protected, supported, and respected.”
Senator Hwang also expressed appreciation for the work of local law enforcement and interfaith leaders in addressing the incident and protecting houses of worship.
“I am grateful for the swift and professional response of our local police departments,” he added. “Their continued efforts help ensure that sacred spaces remain safe havens of worship, reflection, and community life.”
The incident comes at a time when Jewish communities across the United States and around the world are experiencing rising concerns about anti-Semitism. Senator Hwang stressed the importance of collective vigilance and community support.
“We must remain united in rejecting hate, speaking out against intolerance, and standing up for one another,” he said. “An attack on one faith community is an attack on the values we all share.”
Senator Hwang encouraged continued dialogue, compassion, and public awareness while the investigation proceeds.
“I continue to pray for peace, reassurance, and healing for all who were affected,” he said. “Fairfield must continue to be a community grounded in respect, understanding, and shared humanity.”
