“Today’s decision by the Connecticut Siting Council to reject Docket 516R marks a crucial step toward restoring public trust and honoring the voices of residents, municipalities, and environmental advocates,” said Senator Tony Hwang (R—Fairfield). The Council’s move effectively resets the controversial UI proposal and clears the way for a transparent, community-centered process as outlined in Public Act 24-144, which Senator Hwang championed alongside community activists.
“This is not about stopping progress, this is about doing it right,” he added. “We can and must build critical infrastructure in a way that respects environmental impact, neighborhoods and historic sites, and most importantly, the people who live in these communities.” Hwang praised the Council for “finally listening to the will of the people and reaffirming the principle that process and public input matter.”
Senator Hwang added thanks, saying, “I want to thank all of the business and community advocates, churches, Sasco Creek Neighbors Environmental Trust (SCNETI), and the bipartisan state delegations and town leaders of Fairfield and Bridgeport!”
He emphasized the need for UI to now engage in “meaningful, two-way conversations with affected communities from Bridgeport to Southport and Fairfield, not just procedural checking of the boxes. We have now an opening to bring everyone to the table, to discuss all possible ways of moving forward.”
