Sen. Cicarella Supports CT-Based SNAP Solution, Shares Resources for Those in Need

October 28, 2025

Senior Deputy Senate Republican Leader Paul Cicarella (R-North Haven) today voiced support for a responsible, state-based solution to preserve Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits if the ongoing federal government shutdown extends beyond the program’s Nov. 1 funding expiration.

“Many in our community are understandably worried about the future of SNAP benefits amidst the impasse in Washington. Each day without a resolution adds to the urgency.

“Let’s focus on what we can do in Connecticut because we have the tools to act. Thanks to responsible savings, the state has a $4.3 billion Rainy Day Fund. Under a 2017 bipartisan agreement, the Governor has the authority to deal with situations exactly like this when there is a deficiency.

“That money should be used specifically to protect SNAP recipients, not diverted to unrelated spending.

“There is a responsible path forward to make sure those who are in need are taken care of without leading to excess spending on unrelated matters like we’ve seen in the past. My office will remain a resource for those in need. Call 211 or reach out directly to learn more about available support,” he said.
