Statement from Senator Tony Hwang on the Tragic Passing of Charlie Kirk in University Campus Shooting
September 11, 2025

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Charlie Kirk. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.
Charlie was not only a passionate political voice but also a devoted husband and father, loving son, and a tireless advocate for the rights of all Americans. His unwavering commitment to the youth of our nation inspired countless individuals, and his legacy will endure through the values he championed.
Violence has no place in our society. We must come together as a nation to reject hate in all forms. No individual, regardless of their political beliefs, should fear for their safety simply because they are exercising their right to speak and advocate. Public figures, especially those engaging in discourse on college campuses, should be able to do so without the threat of violence. Universities are places for learning, debate, and the free exchange of ideas. It is in these spaces that we must encourage and nurture dialogue even when we disagree.
Charlie’s life serves as a reminder of the power of unity, compassion, and the love of country. His style of calm, reasoned debate, even with those who disagreed with him, exemplified the importance of human interaction and empathy. He proved that respectful dialogue is far more powerful than division, far more lasting than violence.
May we honor Charlie’s memory by embracing the values of courage, understanding, and love of country that he lived by every day. May we stand firm in ensuring that no one is threatened or silenced for expressing their beliefs.”
