Ringed by American flags, a vigil honoring Charlie Kirk in Glastonbury on Sunday was centered on messages of patriotism, faith, family and a call for civil discourse in the wake of the conservative activist’s assassination.

About 500 people gathered at Fountain Green at the busy intersection of Main Street and Hebron Avenue to remember and laud the 31-year-old father of two who was shot to death on Sept. 10 in Utah.

Drivers of heavy-duty pickup trucks blasted air horns and held out raised thumbs. There were no counterprotesters in sight.

Vigil organizer Sarah Dzialo, of the nascent Glastonbury Grassroots Initiative, said the vigil was meant to be nonpartisan with a focus on freedom of speech and other unifying American values.

“We don’t want to get into any Democrat/Republican drama,” Dzialo said. “We just want to focus on unity.”

She said the gathering was meant to mourn and honor Kirk, “to reaffirm our shared commitment to the values that sustain a free society and to stand firmly against any form of politically motivated violence.”
