“Unacceptable.” CT Senate GOP Statement on Large Rise in Confrontations in CT Schools - CT Senate Republic

For Immediate Release

Sen. Eric Berthel, Sen. Rob Sampson, Sen. Ryan Fazio, Sen. Heather Somers and Sen. Stephen Harding issued the following statement regarding a state report which reveals that verbal and physical confrontations are way up in CT schools. (https://www.wfsb.com/2025/08/11/state-doe-report-found-verbal-physical-confrontations-up-ct-schools/)

“The Hartford School District saw a 129% increase in confrontations.

Confrontations in the Manchester School District were up 116%.

This is completely unacceptable.

Senate Republicans this year offered legislation to address classroom behavior and school discipline.

We proposed creating a bipartisan panel to examine state disciplinary policies in public schools and how such policies relate to current behavior trends.

Our Republican proposal was voted down by all Senate Democrats.

That was disappointing, but we hope this alarming report will change Democrats’ minds and start a productive discussion on how to reverse this very negative educational trend.”
