Senator Tony Hwang Help Deliver Over $1.2 Million in State Bridge Funding for Newtown
Local Projects on Stony Brook Road and Jacklin Road to Improve Safety and Infrastructure
NEWTOWN, CT – State Senator Tony Hwang (R–Newtown/Bethel) is proud to announce that Newtown has been awarded over $1.2 million in state funding through the State Local Bridge Program to support the replacement of two aging bridges on town roads. This critical investment will enhance public safety, protect infrastructure, and ensure long-term reliability for local travelers.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) awarded Newtown:
● $642,250 for the replacement of Bridge #096006 on Stony Brook Road
● $647,000 for the replacement of Bridge #096028 on Jacklin Road
“These are meaningful investments in Newtown’s infrastructure and bridge safety,” said Senator Hwang. “Safe, reliable roads and bridges are essential to daily life, emergency response, and our local economy. I’m proud to deliver these state funds to ensure Newtown continues to thrive.”
Senator Hwang credited the success of this funding to strong collaboration with Governor Ned Lamont and CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto, both of whom have prioritized infrastructure upgrades that directly benefit communities across Connecticut.
“I am grateful to Governor Lamont and Commissioner Eucalitto for recognizing the urgent needs of our local communities and ensuring that Newtown received this vital funding,” Hwang added. “Their leadership and support, combined with our ongoing partnership at the state level, make these improvements possible.”
The State Local Bridge Program, created in 1984, provides 50% cost-matching grants to municipalities for the repair or replacement of locally owned bridges. Towns oversee design and construction, while CTDOT provides technical oversight and support. Since 2016, the program has awarded approximately $162 million in grants to towns across Connecticut.
With roughly 4,200 local bridges and culverts maintained by municipalities, this program provides much-needed financial relief while ensuring bridges remain safe and functional for residents.
“This is about keeping our roads safe, reducing long-term repair costs, and strengthening the infrastructure that supports Newtown families and businesses every day,” Hwang said. “I will continue working to make sure our town has the resources and support it needs from the state.”
