Senator Tony Hwang Applauds Designation of “George Farley Russell Memorial Highway” in Southport

SOUTHPORT, CT — State Senator Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield) proudly supported the official naming of a section of U.S. Route 1 (Post Road) in Southport as the “George Farley Russell Memorial Highway,” following the passage of Senate Bill 1377 section 60 by the Connecticut General Assembly and soon to be signed into public law by Governor Ned Lamont.

The newly designated portion of Route 1 runs from the eastern end of Bridge No. 06211 to the beginning of Bridge No. 05858, honoring the memory and enduring legacy of George Farley Russell, a man whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to Southport and the greater Fairfield community.

“George Farley Russell was the very embodiment of tireless public service and community spirit,” said Senator Hwang. “His steadfast leadership, selflessness, and heartfelt pride in Southport inspired all who knew him. By dedicating this stretch of highway in his name, we ensure that his extraordinary contributions to our town and its people will never be forgotten.”

George’s devotion to Southport shone through his long-standing contributions to the Pequot Library, the Sasquanaug Association, and the beloved Southport Blessing of the Fleet. He was a trusted steward of these cherished institutions, giving generously of his time, expertise, and compassion. Whether it was helping preserve the historic character of Southport’s harborfront or rallying community spirit at local events, George left a positive mark everywhere he went.

And while George’s passion for civic engagement was second to none, he was also a dedicated fan of the New York Giants, always proudly sharing his love of the team with friends and family.

Senator Hwang, who serves as the Republican leader on the Transportation Committee, worked collaboratively to include this recognition in the broader CT Department of Transportation infrastructure and agency bill, SB 1377. The highway dedication reflects an ongoing commitment to honor those who have strengthened our communities through their service and stewardship.

Memorial signage will be installed in the coming months, and a formal dedication ceremony will be coordinated with the Russell family, local officials, and community members to pay tribute to George Farley Russell’s remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and community spirit.
