Sen. Perillo and Reps. Romano and McGorty Lead Effort to Address Shelton Traffic Crisis - CT Senate Republic

Shelton, CT – Thanks to the leadership of State Senator Jason Perillo (R-Shelton), State Representative Amy Romano (R-Shelton), and State Representative Ben McGorty (R-Shelton), what was once a largely overlooked traffic issue in Shelton has now become a priority for the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and local law enforcement.

On Sunday morning, Senator Perillo, Representatives Romano and McGorty, members of the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments, Shelton Aldermen Eric McPherson and Ben Perry, and representatives from the Derby Police Department met with CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto to address growing traffic congestion stemming from emergency repairs on the Commodore Hull Bridge.

Just weeks ago, the local impact of these bridge repairs had received minimal public attention. Now, thanks to persistent advocacy from local leaders, CTDOT has acknowledged the situation as a significant concern requiring immediate action.

Sen. Perillo, Rep. Romano, and Rep. McGorty said, “This is a perfect example of what can happen when local leaders come together and demand results. We’ve been pushing hard to bring this issue to the state’s attention, and today’s meeting shows that effort is paying off. While this won’t be resolved overnight, teaming up with CTDOT and local law enforcement is a critical first step. We’re committed to keeping this issue front and center until meaningful improvements are made. We must continue to hold all parties accountable and ensure that the concerns of our community are addressed with urgency. The road to a safer, more effective solution is still ahead, but together, we’ll keep pushing until we reach it.”

Following the meeting, CTDOT announced several initial steps to mitigate the traffic crisis. The agency will fund the deployment of local police officers to manage surface street traffic during peak travel times. Additionally, CTDOT will enhance signage throughout the affected area to better direct drivers and help reduce congestion.
