“Just veto it.” CT Senate GOP Statement on House Bill 5002 - CT Senate Republic

Sen. Jeff Gordon, Sen. Rob Sampson, Sen. Ryan Fazio, Sen. Tony Hwang, Sen. Heather Somers, Sen. John A. Kissel, Sen. Eric Berthel, Sen. Henri Martin, Sen. Paul Cicarella, and Sen. Stephen Harding issued the following statement in reaction to the governor on June 5 saying he wishes he was “more involved” in the crafting of House Bill 5002 while highlighting “red flags” in the legislation which “make people nervous” and have set people’s “hair on fire.”

“That statement is not a vote of confidence, Gov. Lamont.

You say you have regrets about how this deeply flawed legislation was crafted. And rightly so.

Don’t fold to pressure from legislative Democrats at the State Capitol again.

Just veto it.

This bill represents one of the most aggressive attacks on local control our state has ever seen. It’s got state government mandates that override the voices of people in our towns and cities. It strips Democrat and Republican local leaders of the ability to guide growth responsibly in their communities. It forces density from the top down, with little concern for infrastructure, public input, safety, or community character. It deprioritizes many towns from much needed state grants.

So, Gov. Lamont: Please veto H.B. 5002. Let’s go back to the drawing board, work together across the aisle, and find real, common sense solutions that address housing affordability—without gutting local control.“
