H.B. 5002: Form Email - CT Senate Republic

Subject:
Please Veto HB 5002 – Protect Local Control and Responsible Planning

Body:
Dear Governor Lamont,

I am writing to respectfully urge you to veto House Bill 5002.

Even you have acknowledged that this bill contains “red flags” and that you wish you had been more involved in its development. I agree, and so do countless residents and local leaders across our state who are alarmed by what this legislation would mean for our communities.

HB 5002 represents a sweeping overreach by the state into local land use decision-making. It imposes one-size-fits-all mandates on towns and cities without regard for differences in infrastructure, capacity, or community character. It would penalize towns that cannot comply, many through no fault of their own, by deprioritizing them for critical state funding. That is unfair, unworkable, and unwise.

This bill was rushed through the process with limited public input. Local officials, Democrats and Republicans alike, have voiced strong opposition. As a resident of Connecticut, I believe we must address housing affordability through collaborative and realistic solutions that bring people together, not force towns into compliance with top-down mandates that could lead to unintended consequences.

Governor Lamont, please do the right thing. Veto HB 5002 and work with local leaders, legislators from both parties, and the people of Connecticut to craft solutions that are thoughtful, balanced, and effective.

Thank you for your time and service to our state.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
