Story from WFSB:

Watch segment here.

In the final weeks of this year’s legislative session, lawmakers are cracking down on street takeovers.

The senate is voting on increasing penalties and allowing vehicles to be confiscated or even destroyed.

This is something lawmakers have been talking about for a while.

It’s also something both republicans and democrats seem to support.

People have gotten hurt. Lawmakers are trying to send a strong message that those who participate in street takers will be punished.

Right now, there are few consequences.

“People are doing these type of activities – if you turn on the tv you see them. It looks like out of a movie scene. Fires in the middle of the road, people jumping on cruisers, and it’s a misdemeanor for participating,” said Sen. Paul Cicarella, (R), Judiciary Committee.

The bill being voted on in the senate today increases fines for those who participate in street takeovers.

It also allows the DMV to suspend a driver’s license on a 2nd offense and a longer period of time on a 3rd offense. Vehicles can also be confiscated.

Dirt bikes and atv’s are often used in street takeovers. The bill also allows towns to destroy them.

After today’s vote in the senate, the house will take up this bill.
