Sen. Sampson & Harding on Gov. Lamont’s “Sanctuary State”/Trust Act Statement - CT Senate Republic

For Immediate Release

Sen. Rob Sampson and Sen. Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding Gov. Lamont’s statement about the Trust Act:  https://portal.ct.gov/governor/news/press-releases/2025/05-2025/governor-lamont-statement-regarding-list-falsely-labeling-connecticut-a-sanctuary-jurisdiction

“So, Gov. Lamont doesn’t want anyone referring to Connecticut as a ‘sanctuary’ state?

He’d be more accurate if he called Connecticut a ‘super sanctuary’ state, because that’s what Connecticut most assuredly is.

And Connecticut’s super sanctuary policy is statewide, not just in a few cities.

That’s because Connecticut Democrats prohibit local and state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities – including for those who have been convicted for the following violent felonies.  Some examples:

  • Contamination of water supply or food supply for terrorist purposes
  • Damage to public transportation property for terrorist purposes
  • Strangulation
  • Assault of an elderly/blind or disabled person in the second degree with a firearm

Remember when Gov. Lamont recently folded like a lawn chair on this issue? Gov. Lamont recently said he saw no need to change the Trust Act, but now he is going along with Democrat changes to the state law which further hinder federal law enforcement and burden property taxpayers.

Republicans will continue to stand for law and order.  Republicans will continue to stand with victims of violent crime. The governor apparently will continue to fold like a lawn chair to his fellow Democrats.”
