Sen. Perillo Votes to Broaden Property Tax Exemptions for Our Disabled Veterans and Gold Star Spouses - CT Senate Republic

HARTFORD, CT – State Senator Jason Perillo (R-Shelton) proudly voted to broaden S.B. 1276, an Act concerning a property tax exemption for veterans who are permanently and totally disabled, and gold star spouses to include land, as well as dwelling.

Senator Perillo said, “This bill is more than just legislation—it is a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms, and to the families who continue to carry that weight. By passing this bill, Connecticut takes a significant step in ensuring that these veterans and their surviving spouses live with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Key Provisions of S.B. 1276:

  • Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans: Veterans who are rated as permanently and totally disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will be eligible for a full property tax exemption. This measure acknowledges the lifelong challenges these veterans face due to their service-related injuries and disabilities.
  • Property Tax Exemption for Gold Star Spouses: Gold Star spouses, those who have lost a spouse in active military service, will also be granted a property tax exemption. This measure serves as a small, yet meaningful, gesture of support for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Expansion of Veterans’ Tax Exemption to Include Dwellings and Land: The bill also expands the veterans’ property tax exemption to include not just dwellings, but also the land on which those homes are located. Veterans will now be exempt from paying property taxes on both their residence and the land surrounding it, offering additional financial relief.

Sen. Perillo added, “It’s our duty as a state to make sure those who have sacrificed for our safety are never forgotten. This property tax exemption is a small way to say thank you to those who have given so much. I am proud to be part of this effort to support our veterans and their families.”

S.B. 1276 passed unanimously in the Senate Thursday night, it now awaits a vote in the House of Representatives.

“While this bill represents an important step in supporting our veterans and their families, I wish it had gone further to increase the exemption limit and to require that it be provided statewide. These are critical measures that would have provided even greater relief to those who have already sacrificed so much. I remain committed to working towards further reforms that ensure these veterans and surviving spouses receive the full support they deserve,” added Sen. Perillo.
