Sen. Perillo Protects Senior Rights in Long-Term Care Facilities
May 22, 2025

HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT – Today, State Senator Jason Perillo (R-Shelton) introduced an amendment to H.B. 6319 aimed at enhancing the safety and comfort of residents in long-term care facilities. The proposed amendment permits residents to request a room change if they feel unsafe with their current roommate, ensuring their safety. It also safeguards the facility from potential discrimination penalties related to such requests.
Senator Perillo emphasized the importance of this measure, stating, “It is a very possible and probable scenario where an elderly person is roomed together with someone who makes them feel unsafe. Residents have the right to feel safe in their own rooms. We need to protect our senior citizens.”
As written, H.B. 6319, does not provide long-term care facilities with the ability to accommodate room change requests due to the discrimination protections, leaving residents vulnerable to situations that may compromise their well-being. The proposed legislation seeks to address this gap by ensuring that residents’ concerns are heard and acted upon promptly.
During today’s floor debate, CT Senate Democrats stated that nursing homes can currently force two residents to share a room, even if one feels unsafe—leaving vulnerable elderly residents in potentially threatening situations without advocacy.
Senator Perillo added, “We cannot let our seniors’ concerns fall on deaf ears. We need to advocate for their rights to be comfortable. They are residents; they deserve a say in their own living space.”
The proposed amendment is part of a broader legislative effort to strengthen protections for seniors in long-term care facilities. If passed, it will empower residents to make choices about their living arrangements, fostering an environment where they can feel secure and respected.
