Sampson Bill to Rein in Fair Rent Commissions Clears Senate
May 21, 2025

HARTFORD – A bill introduced by Senior Deputy Republican Leader Sen. Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott), long-time opponent of mandated Fair Rent Commissions, passed the Senate this week with bipartisan support. The measure (S.B. 1266) requires commissions to post their bylaws online and comply with public meeting and FOIA laws.
“These commissions were forced on towns by Democrats and undermine private rental agreements,” said Sen. Sampson. “They distort the market and will ultimately raise rents. But if we’re stuck with them, the least we can do is demand transparency, professionalism, and basic accountability.”
Sampson has led the charge against the mandate requiring commissions in towns with over 25,000 residents. While this is a small step, he promises to continue fighting for housing policies that expand affordability—not political interference that makes things worse.
This is one of many successful proposals authored by Sen. Sampson to become law.
