“Epic fail”: Sens. Harding & Sampson on Gov. Lamont’s PURA Backroom Deal Failure
May 7, 2025

Sen. Rob Sampson and Sen. Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding the reported failure of the governor’s backroom deal to reconfigure the state’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority as a quasi-public agency in order to give a sitting state senator a promised state government job.
“File this one under ‘Shady Backroom Connecticut Government Deals Gone Wrong’.
What an epic fail.
Remember when the governor said he didn’t see the ‘impropriety’ of the back room deal?
Remember when the governor admitted PURA doesn’t need to be transformed into a quasi-public entity, even though that was part of the ‘arrangement’?
Remember when the governor didn’t seem interested in having Attorney General Tong weigh in on whether it is legal to appoint a sitting state senator to PURA due to the duel job ban in the Connecticut Constitution?
Republicans do.
Meanwhile, Republicans continue to press for the passage of legislation which will actually lower electricity bills here in Connecticut.”
