Senator Tony Hwang Joins Newly Established Artificial Intelligence Caucus

HARTFORD, CT – Today, Senator Tony Hwang proudly announced his support and membership in the newly formed Artificial Intelligence Caucus of the Connecticut General Assembly. The caucus aims to foster collaboration among lawmakers, experts, and stakeholders to address the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on business, society, and technology.

“Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of our lives, influencing business, entertainment, daily tasks, and more,” said Senator Hwang. “The more we can understand the systems and machine learning behind AI, the better positioned we will be to maximize its utility for the benefit of all. By establishing this caucus, we are opening the door to constructive and honest dialogue on how to craft a thoughtful regulatory framework that doesn’t stifle innovation.”

Senator Hwang emphasized the importance of ensuring that regulations do not overreach and stifle progress in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. He reaffirmed his belief that human interaction and control must remain at the core of AI development. “We must be steadfast in our commitment to the fact that humans control the machine, not the other way around,” Hwang said.

The senator also expressed his concerns about balancing regulations to avoid placing undue burdens on Connecticut businesses. “I believe that we must ensure our state’s businesses remain competitive by preventing excessive regulation that could put them at a disadvantage compared to neighboring states,” Hwang added. Governor Lamont and DECD Commissioner O’Keefe have voiced similar support for fostering a pro-business environment in Connecticut.

Finally, Senator Hwang emphasized the importance of protecting public safety and upholding the rule of law when it comes to AI technologies. “While we encourage innovation, we must ensure that illegal activities, such as deepfakes, AI-generated pornography, and voice and image manipulation, remain prohibited,” said Senator Hwang. “There can be no grey areas when it comes to illegal activity, and the penalties must be swift and significant to deter misuse.”

Senator Hwang looks forward to working alongside fellow legislators and experts in the field to ensure that Connecticut remains at the forefront of responsible AI development while safeguarding the rights and well-being of its residents.
