Connecticut Senate Republican lawmakers today rolled out sweeping tax relief proposals which aim to lower costs for middle class families and job creators.

“Struggling Connecticut middle class families and businesses are getting crushed. They want affordability now. We must reduce taxes across the board,” Sen. Minority Leader Stephen Harding said.

The Senate Republicans are seeking to:

  • Cut income tax rates
  • Simplify the tax code
  • Institute a 2% property tax cap for municipalities
  • Cut licensing fees and reduce filing fees
  • Reduce the paid family leave tax
  • Tighten the bonding cap
  • Eliminate unfunded mandates
  • Permanently extend the fiscal guardrails

Republicans are seeking to deliver income tax relief of more than $700 million in the biennium.

The income tax cut would reduce the 2% marginal rate to 1% and reduce the 4.5% marginal rate to 4% for Income Year 2026. Further rate reductions would occur in Income Year 2028. A portion of the tax reductions would be offset by instituting a SEBAC wage freeze.

“Republicans have already proposed a six-point plan to lower our burdensome energy costs, and now we are offering our vision for wide-ranging tax relief,” Sen. Harding said. “These are common sense ideas that we heard every day from voters while we were on the campaign trail. Republicans will fight every day to make Connecticut more affordable.”
