Senator Tony Hwang Joins St. Rose of Lima School’s Knowledge Bowl: Celebrating Academic Excellence and the Joy of Learning - CT Senate Republic

NEWTOWN, CT – Senator Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield) joined students, families, educators, and community leaders for the annual Knowledge Bowl at St. Rose of Lima School in Newtown – a cherished tradition that fosters intellectual curiosity, teamwork, and a lifelong love of learning in a supportive academic environment.

“This event is always a highlight of the year,” said Senator Hwang. “It’s inspiring to see students demonstrate not only their knowledge but also their enthusiasm and confidence in learning. The energy in the room was contagious, and it was an absolute joy to witness these young minds in action.”

“The Knowledge Bowl represents how much our students have gained over the years, and this aligns very well with the traditions of our school—that we are known to prepare students very well well to be successful in high school. The joy of this event is that all of our students participate in the same activity,” said Dr. Gjoka, Principal at St. Rose of Lima. “What makes it very unique is our dignitaries from the town and the state always come, and we are grateful to Senator Hwang for always coming here.”

The Knowledge Bowl, founded by Mrs. Valerie Petrillo, brings together students, faculty, and local leaders for a spirited competition that emphasizes collaboration and academic achievement. Senator Hwang joined Newtown Police Chief James Kullgren, First Selectman Dan Capeci, and Father Peter Cipriani in forming teams alongside students and faculty, answering challenging trivia questions in a lively test of knowledge.

Valerie Petrillo, Teacher and Knowledge Bowl founder, remarked “It was a perfect culmination of our community, as well as our school spirit—the fact that we devote so much time to getting the kids ready for the next grade level. Education wise, community wise, and school spirit was all included.”

“More than just an academic competition, the Knowledge Bowl represents the spirit of St. Rose School – a place where students are encouraged to explore, think critically, and challenge themselves in a nurturing environment,” Hwang continued. “Events like this reinforce the importance of engaging and participatory education experience, where students feel supported, inspired, and excited to learn. It’s truly a privilege to be part of a tradition that unites the entire community in celebrating the joy of learning.”

The Knowledge Bowl showcases the academic excellence and community spirit that define St. Rose of Lima School. By bringing together students, educators, and local leaders, it reinforces the idea that education is not just about memorizing facts but about fostering curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong passion for discovery. Senator Hwang remains committed to supporting initiatives that create engaging, enriching learning environments where students can thrive.
