Sen. Gordon Working to Create a Child Tax Credit in Connecticut - CT Senate Republic

HARTFORD, CT— Today, Sen. Gordon (R-Woodstock) joined legislative colleagues, including Speaker Ritter and Senate President Pro Temp Looney, showing bipartisan support for proposed legislation that would establish a child tax credit. Sen Gordon also provided testimony to the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee, offering his strong support. This initiative, which Sen. Gordon introduced earlier this session, is designed to provide much-needed financial relief to hard-working people and their families in the 35th Senate District and across Connecticut.

“I believe that investing in our families is investing in the future of Connecticut. This child tax credit isn’t just financial help. It’s a commitment to ensuring that every child and dependent has the support they need in today’s challenging economic climate,” said Sen. Gordon.

This session, Sen. Gordon proposed S.B. 112, which would create a $500 child and dependent tax credit to assist families with children under the age of 17, as well as those who care for disabled or elderly dependents living with the taxpayer. The proposed credit is designed to provide immediate, tangible financial relief to families grappling with the rising costs of living in the state. In addition to helping alleviate everyday financial pressures, the tax credit aims to address the growing challenges many Connecticut residents face due to inflation and the high costs of electricity, housing, food, and other necessities.

Sen. Gordon introduced the proposal as part of his ongoing efforts to create a more affordable environment in Connecticut, particularly for working families who are being hit hardest by the continued high cost of living in Connecticut. The Senator emphasized that a child tax credit is an effective way to support families in need and reduce the financial strain that parents and caregivers experience in their daily lives.

“I have worked tirelessly to make Connecticut more affordable for more people, and a child tax credit is a meaningful way to help families manage everyday expenses,” Sen. Gordon said. “As costs continue to remain high, parents and caregivers are under increasing financial pressure. This proposal would provide crucial support to help ease that burden and ensure that low- and middle-income families can provide for their children. A child tax credit does decrease childhood poverty.”

Sen. Gordon has been an outspoken advocate for common sense fiscal and taxation policies that prioritize the well-being of people, families, and seniors. With the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee’s support, the legislation is now one step closer to becoming law.
