Sen. Gordon Raises Concerns Over Trinity Health’s Physician Employment Changes at Saint Mary’s Hospital
January 14, 2025
HARTFORD, CT – In response to recent announcements from Trinity Health of New England regarding significant employment changes for physicians at Saint Mary’s Hospital, State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock), a practicing physician and member of the Public Health Committee, issued the following statement:
As both a physician and a legislator, I find Trinity Health’s approach deeply concerning. Forcing over 100 dedicated emergency department and hospitalist physicians to either join a third-party employment organization or face termination within 90 days creates major uncertainty that jeopardizes patient care and undermines the trust and stability these professionals need to provide high-quality medical services. Physicians deserve the time, transparency, and respect to understand fully what an employment change means for them and their families, as well as the details of the contract negotiations that affect them, and not be given rushed ultimatums that could cause them to lose their jobs,” said Sen. Gordon.
Senator Gordon also raised serious concerns over the broader implications for healthcare in Connecticut.
“This decision comes at a time when healthcare systems across the state are already under immense strain. These actions, which appear profit-driven, not only threaten patient care but also risk destabilizing entire communities that depend on these hospitals for critical services. Connecticut cannot afford to let healthcare workers and patients bear the brunt of these types of corporate decisions. I urge Trinity Health to reverse what it is doing and to prioritize the well-being of their staff so that they can continue to provide good care for our communities. This should be about patient care over profits,” he said.
