Sen. Gordon Proposes Workforce Development Bill to Address Health Care Shortages - CT Senate Republic

HARTFORD, CT – State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock), a practicing doctor and state legislator, announced today the introduction of Senate Bill 260, which targets workforce development to Address Health Care Shortages.

As both a physician and a lawmaker, Sen. Gordon has seen firsthand the severe health care workforce shortages that are impacting patients and communities across Connecticut.

“Every day in my practice, I see the consequences of these shortages,” said Sen. Gordon. “Rural areas and underserved communities are struggling to recruit and retain the health care professionals they need to deliver essential care. It’s clear that we must act now to support those who dedicate their lives to this critical work.”

SB 260 takes a two-pronged approach to address this crisis:

  1. Loan Forgiveness Program: Health care professionals would be eligible for up to $50,000 in loan forgiveness if they commit to working full-time for four years or part-time for eight years in rural or underserved areas, or in fields experiencing workforce shortages.
  2. Tuition Payment Program: Medical and nursing students could receive tuition coverage in exchange for a similar commitment to practice in high-need areas after graduation.

Both programs are designed to bolster the state’s health care workforce by alleviating financial barriers for students and professionals while ensuring that underserved areas have access to quality care.

“We can’t wait for this crisis to solve itself. By investing in our future health care professionals, we can strengthen our workforce and improve health outcomes for all residents,” Sen. Gordon continued.

Sen. Gordon strongly encourages fellow legislators and stakeholders to support SB 260 and help move this legislation forward.
