Proposes ‘Putting Patients Over Profits Act’ as solution to protect patients and healthcare professionals.
HARTFORD, CT – In light of Prospect Medical Holdings recent announcement that it is initiating chapter 11 proceedings in the United States Bankruptcy Court, State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-Woodstock), a member of the Public Health Committee, remains strongly committed to addressing the potential consequences for Connecticut’s healthcare workers, patients, and communities. He has been actively engaged in discussions with the Governor’s staff and state agency commissioners to ensure swift, coordinated, and proper actions.
“Connecticut families rely on the hospitals impacted by Prospect Medical Holdings bankruptcy for critical care, and thousands of workers are understandably concerned about their livelihoods. As both a practicing doctor, and a senator, my priority is to safeguard the accessibility of high-quality and safe healthcare, and the stability of jobs in our state,” said Senator Gordon.
He plans to meet with employee unions representing affected healthcare workers, reinforcing support for their rights during this challenging time.
“Healthcare is a cornerstone of every community, and it is vital that we work collaboratively to ensure these institutions remain operational for needed medical care, and that workers are supported and paid. People should continue to seek local medical care, especially when there is an emergency,” he added.
Senator Gordon has raised alarms the last two years about the problems created by Prospect Medical Holdings, and proposed ways to fix it.
“What happened in Massachusetts with Steward Health affecting many hospitals, and some of them closing because of financial mismanagement and corporate greed, as well as elsewhere in the country as highlighted by a recent congressional senate budget committee report, is happening here in Connecticut. The time is long overdue to facilitate the sale of Prospect’s hospitals and ECHN to Yale, if Yale remains interested in the purchase that it has been working on. We must get Prospect Medical out of Connecticut,” he said.
Senator Gordon has proposed The Putting Patients Over Profits Act, which would prevent for-profit private equity firms buying or controlling Connecticut hospitals, prevent the sale of hospital real estate and assets to a third party as part of profit schemes that require the hospitals to be saddled with expensive lease payments, and better protect health care professionals making medical decisions from the corporatization of medicine by business interests.
