As Connecticut residents are opening their January electricity bills, Chief Deputy Republican Leader Eric Berthel (R-Watertown) and Connecticut Republicans today unveiled a detailed six-point plan to bring about stability and relief for consumers.
“Residents across my district are outraged and hurting from the unsustainable energy costs. I share their anger. My Republican colleagues and I continue to lead on this issue, and again offer realistic solutions. The fees that you see on your bill are hidden taxes and this is wrong. Families, seniors, those on fixed incomes, and our local businesses need help.
“For the past year, we’ve offered viable solutions to reduce energy costs—solutions that were dismissed by legislative Democrats. The time for inaction is over. We are in session. We can get solutions on the table to restore affordability in our state if the majority decides to join us,” said Senator Berthel.
The Republicans’ plan would:
1) remove Public Benefits Charges from electric bills
2) prohibit agreements that buy electricity at 150 % above the wholesale price
3) redefine “Class I renewable energy source” to include any
electricity generated from a hydropower or nuclear power generating facility
4) separate PURA from DEEP
5) eliminate any incentive program that increases electric demand, including, any electric vehicle rebate program
6) study ways to increase the supply of natural gas
