Senator Tony Hwang Reappointed as Republican Leader on Transportation Committee
Senator Tony Hwang has been reappointed by Senate Republican Leader Stephen Harding to serve as Chief Deputy Leader of the Connecticut Senate Republican Caucus for the 2025-2026 legislative session. Additionally, Senator Hwang will continue as the Republican Leader of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Transportation Committee, a critical role reflecting his steadfast leadership on transportation safety, efficiency, and infrastructure issues.
The Transportation Committee oversees all matters related to the Department of Transportation, highways, bridges, navigation, aeronautics, mass transit, railroads, the State Traffic Commission, and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Senator Hwang has been a tireless advocate for policies that prioritize public safety, efficient mass transit, and infrastructure improvements to ensure Connecticut residents and businesses can travel effectively and safely.
“There is no stronger advocate for road safety and transportation policies than Senator Hwang,” said Senate Republican Leader Stephen Harding. “His diligent work is helping make Connecticut roads safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and motorists. Senator Hwang’s leadership is preventing senseless tragedies, and I am proud to reappoint him to this vital role.”
“I am honored to continue leading on transportation issues that matter so much to Connecticut’s residents,” said Senator Hwang. “Through bipartisan collaboration on the Transportation Committee, we have made significant progress, such as the passage of the Vision Zero law, which focuses on reducing roadway and pedestrian fatalities by improving awareness, education, and roadway design.”
Senator Hwang has championed numerous safety initiatives, including the landmark Vision Zero legislation (PA 23-116) and Wrong-Way Driving Safety law (PA 23-51). These efforts address critical concerns, from redesigning dangerous roadways to implementing technology and education programs that combat wrong-way driving and impaired driving.
Hwang has also been a leading voice for improving Metro-North Rail safety and efficiency and has collaborated with the Department of Motor Vehicles to enhance service delivery through expanded online programs.
“Our work is far from over,” Hwang emphasized. “Every day, we hear heartbreaking stories of wrong-way crashes, distracted driving, and impaired driving. These are preventable tragedies, and we must remain committed to eliminating them through smart policies, education, and improved infrastructure. Additionally, promoting transportation-oriented development will help increase community interconnectivity, supporting our economy and enhancing quality of life.”
Senator Hwang’s leadership continues to focus on delivering solutions that prioritize safety, innovation, and efficiency for all Connecticut residents and businesses.
