CT Senate GOP Urge Governor: “Be Unwavering” in Defense of Smart CT Fiscal Caps

December 3, 2024

The CT Senate Republican Caucus today issued the following statement regarding the governor’s comments about the state’s fiscal guardrails.

“Republicans urge the governor to be unwavering in defense of the state’s bipartisan common sense fiscal caps. Those caps – which Republicans strenuously pushed to implement in 2017 when the state Senate was tied – are working. They have injected much-needed discipline into our government spending and borrowing.

The governor wants an ‘honestly balanced’ budget. So do Republicans.

The governor won’t support a dishonest budget which builds in future spending holes that our children will have to pay for. Republicans won’t support such a budget, either.

The governor spoke out against state government’s ‘credit card mentality’ which created ‘big problems’ for Connecticut in the past and that he ‘won’t let it happen again’. Republicans agree with him.

Bottom line: The fiscal discipline measures Republicans and Democrats agreed upon are not broken. They don’t need ‘fixing’. But they are already under attack by majority Democrats in the state legislature even as the caps are delivering tax cuts and lowering our credit card bills.

Gov. Lamont: Continue to stand strong in defense of limited government spending. Republicans will continue to be your ally in this fight for Connecticut’s future.”
