CT Senate GOP: 2019 CT Law Handcuffing Law Enforcement Must Be Repealed

December 9, 2024

For Immediate Release

Sen. Rob Sampson, Sen. Eric Berthel, and Sen. Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding a Peruvian citizen previously deported from the U.S. being taken into custody by immigration officials this week after being arrested in Hartford on sexual assault charges. Federal immigration officials said the individual was arrested on Nov. 20 by the Hartford Police Department and released on bond before immigration officials could lodge an immigration detainer against him.

“Five years ago, majority Democrats at the State Capitol passed an asinine state law forbidding local police officers from even communicating with federal immigration agents. If law enforcement can’t talk to each other, how does that possibly make our communities safer?

That ludicrous law senselessly handcuffed law enforcement, and it has produced terrible situations like this.

Connecticut Republicans will continue to support all levels of law enforcement and all violent crime victims. That’s why Republicans will keep pushing to repeal that short-sighted 2019 law which made Connecticut less safe. It’s time for Democrats at the State Capitol to open their eyes, admit they made a big mistake, and join Republicans in fixing the policy they so enthusiastically broke.“
