Sen. Berthel: Incorrect Census numbers raise “a host of questions.”
July 30, 2024
Sen. Eric Berthel, Ranking Senator on the Appropriations Committee, Sen. Henri Martin, Ranking Senator on the Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee, Sen. Tony Hwang, Ranking Senator on the Transportation Committee and Ranking Member of the Bonding Subcommittee of the Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee, and Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding today issued the following statement with regard to a CT Inside Investigator report that highlights how U.S. Census numbers showing a population boom of more people moving into Connecticut from other states between 2021 and 2022 were incorrect.
“The report raises a host of questions. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it’s more likely Connecticut saw a net loss of 13,500 people to other states? In other words, our state population decreased but there was an increase in the cost and size and scope of the state government? How does that make sense?
“With this in mind, we must hear from majority Democrats who control Connecticut government decisions. They hailed and boasted of the higher population numbers at the time. What are Democrats’ reaction to this new report? Do they dispute it? Do they deny it? Was a different Census product used to estimate population in non-decennial census years? And can majority Democrats tell us what impact, if any, this finding will have on Connecticut receiving its fair share of federal resources for education, healthcare, transportation, and more?”
