CT’s Electric Grid: CT GOP Lawmakers Continue to Raise Questions
July 17, 2024
Sen. Ryan Fazio, Ranking Senator on the Energy and Technology Committee, Sen. Jeff Gordon, and Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding today issued the following statement regarding ISO-New England projecting that the region will see a 23% increase in electric demand in just the next decade.
“How is our electric grid going to handle that increased demand? How will electricity be distributed to the rural parts of the state, cities, and suburbs? How will the electric grid and charging infrastructure be built? Who is going to pay for all of this?
These are the questions that Connecticut Senate Republicans have been asking for two years while our constituents have been paying sky-high energy bills and many proposals from the majority party have caused those bills to increase even more. Instead of just asking questions and opposing inflationary policies, Senate Republicans have put forth specific plans to reduce electricity costs and increase future reliability of the grid – while also protecting our environment. Our Senate Republican energy plan will reduce energy bills in the short run by 10 to 15 percent by stripping out mandates, fees, and taxes hidden in the ‘public benefits’ section of our energy bills. Our plan will improve reliability in the long run by securing natural gas supply and shoring up clean nuclear and hydropower generation. We can – and must – act as a state to limit costs for our residents and ensure that the lights, A/C, and electric heat that we all rely on will always work in the decades to come.”
