CT Senate GOP Statement on Recent Street Takeovers in New Haven, Bethany, North Haven

Sen. Paul Cicarella, Ranking Senator on the Public Safety and Security Committee, Sen. Jeff Gordon, member of the Public Safety and Security Committee, and Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding issued the following statement regarding apparent street takeovers at a busy New Haven intersection as well as in Bethany and North Haven this weekend.

“A New Haven resident said, ‘It’s a scary thing when you get caught up in these takeovers. We have to do something.’ Connecticut Senate Republicans agree wholeheartedly. We commend local police on acting swiftly to address the takeovers, but Republicans believe the state must create stiffer deterrents to this lawlessness. They will keep happening if we do not do more. We hope Democrats work with us to enact tougher penalties for these dangerous, illegal acts which put the safety of the general public and law enforcement at serious risk.”
