Sen. Somers Applauds Grants for Stonington, Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation and Yellow Farmhouse Education Center

Sen. Heather Somers, who represents North Stonington and Stonington, today applauded the announcement of state grants for Stonington, the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, and the Yellow Farmhouse Education Center.

Stonington was awarded a $200,000 grant to conduct assessment activities at the former 5.5-acre industrial site at 21 Pawcatuck Avenue to potentially enable residential end use. The funds come from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Brownfield Remediation and Development Program.

The North Stonington-based Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation was awarded $421,050 to develop public programs that value their ancestry, traditions, and way of life.
The Stonington-based Yellow Farmhouse Education Center was awarded $288,000 to upgrade wayfinding signage to make it easier for visitors to navigate the 63-acre property, build accessible pathways and restrooms to make the property more comfortable for visitors of all abilities, and build a multipurpose Welcome Pavilion which will serve as a three-season programming and gathering place and welcome center.

“These are wise investments which will pay significant future dividends in both Stonington and North Stonington,” Sen. Somers said.  “From improving our environment and restoring property to productive use to helping to enhance visitors’ experiences in engaging, meaningful, and relevant ways, these grants are focused on improving the quality of life in our region.”

The funds for the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation and the Yellow Farmhouse Education Center are being released under the state’s Good to Great Grant Program, which is co-administered by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and CT Humanities.
