Senator Seminara Applauds Senate Passage of Stronger Protections for Victims of Domestic and Intimate Partner Abuse

HARTFORD- Today, Senator Lisa Seminara (R-Avon) applauded the Senate’s passage of S.B. 1118, which strengthens protections for victims of domestic and intimate partner abuse.

The legislation addresses a gap in previously passed legislation. Senator Seminara authored a strike-all amendment which added new protections for victims of domestic and intimate partner abuse.

Senator Seminara said, “It was just last week that we debated S.B. 5, and I brought to the chamber’s attention a gap in the bill. The language passed was silent as to any situation in which an order of alimony had been entered prior to the conviction of the abuse. The amendment addresses that silence. I commend Senator Gary Winfield for hearing my concerns and working collaboratively to rectify that gap in state law. It is always beneficial to the people of the state of Connecticut when we can work in a bipartisan manner, and I look forward to its passage by the House.”

The amendment, which passed with bipartisan support, states that any existing order of alimony would be terminated after the conviction upon a simple motion to the court.

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives, where it awaits further action.
