Audubon CT Volunteers, Sen. Kelly Work to Protect Bird Nesting Area at Long Beach
April 21, 2022

STRATFORD – Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) joined volunteers with Audubon Connecticut and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Wildlife Division on Thursday, April 14 to construct a fence at Long Beach that will protect a delicate bird nesting area.
The new fence will protect the following species: Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher, and Least Tern.
“Each spring our beaches become home to nesting birds and other wildlife looking for food and shelter. It’s important to protect them and make our beaches a safe home for all,” said Sen. Kelly. “It was wonderful to see so many volunteers working together on this project. If you want to get involved to help protect Connecticut wildlife and preserve our environment, Audubon Connecticut has great opportunities. With Earth Day right around the corner, I also encourage everyone to consider how they can give back and make a difference in their communities and support our planet.”
“The fencing will make it easy for people to avoid accidentally stepping on eggs, but once the chicks hatch they can be anywhere on the beach,” explains Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe, Audubon Connecticut Director of Bird Conservation. “You can make a difference for these birds by keeping an eye out for chicks or groups of birds and giving them space. Also, it is best to visit beaches with nesting birds at low tide when there is plenty of space for everyone to Share the Shore.”
Upcoming Audubon Connecticut volunteer opportunities include:
- Earth Day 4/22 10:00 AM -3:00 PM
- Saturday 4/23 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Salt marsh stewards will be on site until 5:00 PM.
- Sunday 4/24 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
